The space can be interpreted as a shrine or space dedicated to ritual activities and the protection of sacred objects.
Pompeii: The archaeologists they brightened the new room with its blue walls and elaborate decorative screens and made Pompeii even more attractive to thousands of visitors.
“Pompeii never ceases to amaze, it is still a partially unexplored treasure chest. That’s why we have funded new excavations and are working to preserve the high quality of the archaeological park,” said Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano.
The blue color found in this new discovery is rare, and the Ministry of Culture points out that it is generally associated with environments of great decorative importance.
According to the ministry, an in-depth analysis of the room revealed that the space can be interpreted as a sanctuary or a space dedicated to ritual activities and the protection of sacred objects.
On the walls of the room are female figures said to belong to the four seasons, as well as allegories related to agriculture and animal husbandry.
Also found were fifteen amphorae and a bronze set of two jugs and two oil lamps.
According to the Ministry of Culture, the project aims to improve the structure of the area by making “the protection of Pompeii’s great heritage more effective and sustainable”.
The excavations are part of a larger project to secure a perimeter between the excavated and unexcavated areas of the archaeological park, which today has more than 13,000 excavated rooms.
